A CARING pair of brothers coined in more than £6,000 in memory of a much-loved Johnstone mum by staging a fundraising boxing match.

Sam and William Wylie organised the event at Paisley’s Lagoon Leisure Centre to honour their mother Mhairi, who died in 2014 at the age of 42.

Mhairi, who had battled cervical cancer, is much missed by her family, with Sam and William keen to remember her in a meaningful way.

And when William suggested a fight night with pals from Renfrewshire Boxing Club in aid of Joe’s Cervical Cancer Trust, they knew the event would be a real knockout.

Friends and family turned up in their droves, with the night raising much-needed cash for the worthy cause.

Sam, 22, who has been boxing since he was nine, said he was stunned by how many people showed their support.

He told The Gazette: “The event couldn’t have gone any better and I’d like to think it would have made my mum proud.

“It obviously means a lot to all of us to have raised the money in memory of her and we are so thankful to everyone who supported us.

“A lot more people turned up than we were expecting, including old boxing pals and friends I hadn’t seen since we left school.

“It was just a fantastic night.”

The event featured nine fights on the undercard before Sam and his friend Robbie Burns went toe-to-toe in the main event.

“A lot of people were coming up to me to say how much they enjoyed it,” Sam added. “Even those who go to professional nights said it was better than many they had been to.

“That shows they enjoyed their night, which means a lot.

“My fight with my old friend Robbie was absolutely brilliant and it finished in a draw.

“The fighters were all so respectful throughout and gave it their all.

“We decided to raise money for Joe’s Cervical Cancer Trust because it is one of the major charities for that particular type of cancer. We also gave half the money to one guy who was raising money for his son.

“It was just a brilliant night and we want to thank everyone who came along to support the event.”
