COUNCIL chiefs have vowed to inject £400,000 into upgrading Renfrewshire’s nine cemeteries over the next three years, on top of previously-announced investment.
Following extensive work which has already taken place at Lochwinnoch Cemetery and Hawkhead Cemetery, in Paisley, councillors across the chamber welcomed a commitment to pump more cash into other graveyards, including those in Kilbarchan, Bishopton, Houston and Inchinnan.
Councillor Andy Doig, who has pushed for improvements at Kilbarchan Cemetery, said: “Over the last few years, council budgets have got tighter and tighter and it’s been easy for many local authorities to cut back in this area but we are talking about people’s bereavements here – and that’s very important.
“The problem with Kilbarchan is it is built on a hill and it’s had more than its fair share of drainage issues.
“It does need a lot of attention.
“I am delighted with this commitment the administration has made.”
