DOZENS of twinkle-toed youngsters took to the stage for the third Renfrewshire Schools Secondary Dance Competition.

The event took place at Renfrew High, where pupils from the host school competed against other youngsters from Johnstone High, St Benedict’s High, in Linwood, Gryffe High, in Houston, Park Mains High, in Erskine, and Castlehead High, Paisley Grammar School and St Andrew’s Academy, in Paisley.

The contest was organised by Renfrewshire Leisure’s Sport Services Active Schools team and pupils from all year groups were able to take part.

More than one dance group from each school were invited to perform a routine in each of the three categories – Junior, Senior and Mixed.

The event was judged by Sam Duncan, who is an Active Schools co-ordinator and assistant teacher at Jam Dance; Jaime Stalley, an Active Schools sessional coach and former dancer with the Jazzle Dazzle group; and Karen Moir, who runs the Karen E. Moir Dance and Drama School.

Winners of the Junior category were St Benedict’s High, with Renfrew High in second place and Castlehead High in third.

Renfrew Hight triumphed in the Senior category, claiming both first and second place, with Gryffe High finishing third.

In the Mixed category, it was Gryffe High which claimed the glory, with Renfrew High as runner-up and Johnstone High securing third spot.

Councillor Lisa-Marie Hughes, Renfrewshire Leisure chairperson, told The Gazette: “There were some great performances from all the schools and they performed a range of different dance styles.

“We encourage young people to get involved in dance as it is very creative and also a good way to keep fit and healthy.”
