FIREFIGHTERS were on a mercy mission with a difference last weekend as they raised money for a worthy cause.

Crew members at the community fire stations in Johnstone and Renfrew staged a sponsored car wash, collecting almost £2,000 between them.

The event was held in aid of the The Fire Fighters Charity, which offers specialist, lifelong support for retired crew and those injured in the line of duty.

Motorists were encouraged to steer their way towards their local station, with the clean-up crews making sure all of the visiting vehicles scrubbed up nicely.

And there was never any danger of the fundraising drive being a washout, despite Saturday’s soggy weather.

Chief Commander John Dreghorn, based at Johnstone Community Fire Station, said his team welcomed more than 100 people who were happy to have their car cleaned in return for a donation.

“It was a big turnout,” he added. “Over the course of the day, there were maybe about 20 of us helping out.”

A total of £923 was raised by the Johnstone crew, with a further £974 brought in by their Renfrew colleagues.

Fiona McMillan, of The Fire Fighters Charity, said every penny raised will be put to good use.

She added: “Firefighters put their lives on the line to save people like you and your family every minute, every hour.

“No matter how dangerous the situation, brave firefighters will take action. They are everyday heroes.

“We are all safe in the knowledge they are there for us whenever we need them – and it is important for them to know they are also valued, by both the public and the corporate world.”
