RENFREWSHIRE school pupils were getting down to business at the Young Enterprise area finals last week.

Fifth and sixth year students from Johnstone High, Linwood High, Renfrew High and Paisley Grammar competed in teams against East Renfrewshire and Inverclyde schools at the Normandy Hotel in Renfrew.

Since August, the pupils have developed and marketed their own products and for the finals, each team were required to display their product, submit a business report, give a team presentation and be interviewed by judges.

Each element was judged and scored by representatives from intu Braehead and computer network company Hewlett Packard Enterprise in Erskine.

Team Bamboozle from Johnstone High won the ‘Renfrewshire’ category and were the runner-up for ‘Best Business Report’ after they impressed judges with their inventive bamboo toothbrush.

Other original products on offer included Paisley Grammar’s re-useable metal straws and eco-friendly bamboo products designed by Renfrew High.

Bob Davidson, area chair of Young Enterprise, said: “Well done to the 14 teams that made the finals.

“Completing the programme given the pressures of exams is a significant achievement.

“Products that encouraged good mental health and the environment highlight how young people are thinking about the future and what’s important to them as young adults.”

The overall prize was awarded to the team Hour Crafty Clocks from St Columba’s High, in Gourock, who will go forward to the Scottish Finals in June.
