A RENFREW teenager has pledged to complete a 5k run on 21 consecutive days to raise vital funds for frontline NHS workers.

Calvin Bogie, 19, decided he wanted to set himself a more ambitious goal after taking part in the ‘£5 for 5k Run for Heroes’ challenge, in which participants donate £5 to the NHS after completing 5k of exercise.

The apprentice engineer started his 21-day challenge on Friday and had already managed to raise more than half of his £1,000 fundraising target by the next day.

“I didn’t think I would raise so much so quickly,” Calvin told The Gazette.

“I had been a bit bored, so I thought running would be a good way to pass the time. After completing the 5k challenge, I decided to take it a wee step further and do it for 21 days straight.

“I’ve got such a great response so far and I now feel motivated to raise as much as I can.”

The money raised will be donated to NHS Charities Together, which funds major capital projects, research and medical equipment for hospitals.

Calvin has been running a variety of different routes around Renfrew, as well as venturing as far as Inchinnan and back, observing social distancing guidelines along the way.

The former Trinity High pupil hopes that his efforts will encourage others to undertake fundraising activities in support of frontline workers.

Calvin said: “Captain Tom Moore has raised more than £25million by walking around his garden but you see on the news that the NHS is still struggling and does not have enough PPE (personal protective equipment).

“I want to do as much as I can to help. Otherwise, I would be sitting about doing nothing anyway.

“There’s only so much television you can watch, so going out for a run every day changes it up a bit.”
