CARE home residents in Bridge of Weir enjoyed an old-fashioned knees-up as staff turned back the clock to mark the 75th anniversary of VE Day.

The fun took place at Marcus Humphrey House, in Quarriers Village, where there was plenty of bunting and the chance to enjoy wartime tunes during a karaoke session.

Senga McIntosh, deputy manager at Marcus Humphrey House, said: “It was such a good day.

“Many of the residents said it reminded them of when they used to go to the dance hall and first met their spouses.

“It’s important for the residents to have these history-themed events because they remember the days from their youth a lot more easily than things that happened the day before.”

The event proved such a hit that it attracted the attention of passers-by and people living in nearby Quarriers Village, who contributed to the party atmosphere by clapping and dancing at the entrance to the care home.

There was also entertainment provided by an accordion player and two teenage pipers from Bridge of Weir who have been visiting the care home every Thursday to perform for residents during the ‘Clap for Carers’ applause.

Senga said: “The staff talk a lot about how we can stimulate the residents because they enjoy having their families come to visit and they’ve not got that just now.

“You often see that the residents are upset about this because they go very quiet but, during the event on Friday, they were smiling, dancing and waving their hands.”

Staff are hoping to hold similar events at the care home on a regular basis, with plans for a cowboy-themed event on May 22.
