POLICE are hunting an arsonist who left a Renfrew couple in need of hospital treatment after setting their front door on fire.

The terrifying incident took place in the town's Cumbrae Road at around 11.30pm on Friday.

A 50-year-old woman and 66-year-old man who were inside their home at the time suffered smoke inhalation and were taken to the Queen Elizabeth University Hospital, in Glasgow, for treatment.

Detective Constable Lauren McGill, of Paisley CID, said: “Deliberately starting fires is a reckless act and we are appealing for anyone with any information to get in touch.

“Anyone who may have seen any suspicious activity, witnessed the incident or has dashcam footage or private CCTV is asked to get in touch.”

Information can be passed on to the police by calling 101 and quoting incident number 4,403 of May 22. Alternatively, ring Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111, where anonymity can be maintained.
