A WARNING has been issued about phone scams after a Lochwinnoch pensioner was conned out of £4,000.

The 81-year-old victim received a phone call on his landline at around 9am on Monday from a fraudster claiming to be working on behalf of Amazon.

The scammer claimed the OAP had been overcharged for a subscription and asked him to provide his bank details so the company could provide a refund to his account.

After handing over the information, the victim was told that to ensure the refund was successful, he would need to download software to his computer.

The fraudster was then able to access the victim’s computer remotely and steal £4,000 from his bank account.

After the pensioner realised he had been conned, he contacted his bank, who alerted the police.

Officers are advising Renfrewshire residents to make sure they never give bank details or other personal information to anyone they do not know or trust.
