THREE young children have died after a fire ripped through a flat in Renfrewshire.

Fiona Gibson, 12, Alexander James Gibson, eight, and five-year-old Philip Gibson were taken to hospital following the incident in Paisley last night but, tragically, could not be saved.

A 39-year-old woman - named locally as the children's mum, Julie Daley - was taken by ambulance to the town's Royal Alexandra Hospital and is said to be fighting for her life.

The fire took place at an upper cottage flat in Renfrew Road, in the Gallowhill area, at around 9pm.

Police confirmed that the three children were taken to the Queen Elizabeth University Hospital, in Glasgow, but died a short time later.

A spokesperson said: “An investigation is underway to establish the exact circumstances of this incident.

“Anyone who has information that could assist our enquiries should contact police via telephone number 101, quoting incident number 3,669 of June 19.”

A report on the tragedy will be sent to the Procurator Fiscal.
