LOCKDOWN did not stop Renfrewshire’s latest centenarian from celebrating the landmark with family and friends outside her care home.

Jenny Norris was joined by loved ones in the car park of Robertson House, Erskine, on Thursday to mark her 100th birthday in style.

A gazebo was set up outside the care home to allow Jenny to sit outside and enjoy the celebrations while social distancing.

Frank Brown, one of Jenny’s nephews, told The Gazette: “The day went really well, I was really pleased with it.

“Jenny had a great time. She’s been in lockdown for months, so she was really delighted to see all her friends and family.

“Many people came along to give Jenny their best wishes, as she’s lived in Erskine for over 30 years and knows a lot of people in the area.”

Jenny was presented with a birthday cake in the shape of an old-fashioned fire helmet, as during the Second World War, she had worked as a driver for the fire brigade.

The cake was created by the daughter of one of care home staff members, who also made cupcakes resembling hats to commemorate Jenny’s later career as a hatter.

Under the gazebo, Jenny received many presents and cards, as well as her congratulatory message from the Queen later in the day.

A piper performed the folk song The Rowan Tree, which was her mother’s favourite.

Frank added: “I can’t thank the care home staff enough.”
