POLICE are stepping up patrols at a Renfrew skatepark amid reports that unruly teenagers have been gathering there to take drink and drugs.

Officers agreed to stage a clampdown at the Robertson Park site after residents complained their life is being made a misery by the anti-social behaviour of boozed-up youths.

Councillor Jane Strang, who represents Renfrew North and Braehead, is among those who have expressed concerns about the problem.

She told The Gazette: “The skatepark should be enjoyed for it’s main purpose, not as a hangout for allegedly taking drinks and drugs.

“It is welcome to hear police are going to be increasing patrols at the site and I will liaise closely with them in monitoring activity to hopefully crack down on this recent behaviour.”

Lindsay McKillop, secretary of Renfrew Community Council, said she has been “absolutely disgusted” by the behaviour of yobs gathering at the skatepark, which has included hurling abuse at passers-by.

“Mums and dads, as well as older people, have been getting verbally abused by young lads, which is bang out of order,” she added.

“There has been alleged drinking and drug taking at the skatepark, some involving children who are well underage and have been left unable to stand because they are in such a state.

“It’s become a free-for-all and many kids are terrified to go there, with some of them skateboarding elsewhere as a result.”

Ms McKillop said: “The minority are spoiling it for the majority and, if they don’t stop this, they’re going to lose the skatepark.”

Inspector Allan O’Hare, head of community policing for Renfrewshire, confirmed his officers are working alongside councillors and park wardens to address the issue.

He told The Gazette: “The community police officers are well aware of recent incidents in the park and enquiries are ongoing.

“We have been in communication with local councillors and the wardens about this matter and are increasing foot patrols in the area.

“We would ask residents to report anti-social behaviour to us when they see it and not wait until later, so we can action officers to go and investigate.”
