ELDERLY people in Renfrewshire have been warned to be on their guard for telephone fraudsters trying to scam them out of their savings.

An 84-year-old Renfrew woman was contacted by a man on August 21 claiming to be from her bank’s fraud department and asked to transfer over £10,000.

The woman had been told that she was at risk of being defrauded and the transfer was to stop that fraud taking place.

When she contacted her bank they said that no such request had been made.

Inspector Allan O’Hare, of the Johnstone, Renfrew and villages community policing team, said: "The woman had been told that her bank account had been compromised in relation to a building company and in order to safeguard that out she had to transfer the money into another account.

"She was asked for £10,000 to transfer and unfortunately gave out her bank details.

"The woman has gone to her bank in Paisley and the manager has made it clear that someone has tried to defraud her. Thankfully nothing was transferred.

"Our inquiries are continuing. This is a reminder to people that they should never give their bank details out over the phone."
