AN investigation is underway after would-be thieves broke into a pensioner's house in Elderslie.

The 69-year-old man had locked and secured his Malloch Crescent home at around 11.30am on Tuesday to go shopping.

At around 12.30pm, a 44-year-old woman walking her dog saw a man sitting in the driver seat of a black Peugeot parked outside the pensioner's house.

The driver began repeatedly beeping the car horn after spotting the dog walker, and two men quickly ran out the main door of the property.

Both suspects entered the vehicle which quickly drove off, and the witness contacted the police.

Officers attended the scene and found the pensioner's home had been ransacked, with damage to the glass panels of the front door.

However, nothing appears to have been taken from the property.

The two suspects who ran out the property are described as being in their mid-20 and at the time, they were wearing black hoodies, black jogging bottoms, baseball caps, masks and gloves.

The registration of the getaway vehicle is SL56 LSY and cops believe it was driven in the direction of Ayrshire after the break-in.

Inspector Allan O’Hare, head of community policing for Renfrewshire, said: "If anybody has seen this vehicle in or around the Johnstone area prior to or after this incident, please get in touch with us."

Anyone who has information that could assist police with their enquiries should call 101, quoting incident number 1525 of September 1.
