A RENFREW youngster is taking a swing at a tough golfing challenge to raise money for a worthy cause.

Nine-year-old Jensen Basketter aims to complete 72 holes at Renfrew Golf Club during the September bank holiday weekend in support of Cancer Research UK.

The Kirklandneuk Primary pupil only started learning the sport last year but has already played at well-known golf courses such as Turnberry and Carnoustie.

At the age of eight, he became the youngest competitor to complete a full round playing in a regional qualifier for the Junior European Open at Alloa Golf Club.

Jensen has set himself a fundraising goal of £400 for his 72-hole challenge, which takes place on September 27 and 28.

He told The Gazette: “I think it will be really enjoyable.

“It will be great to raise some money for people who are sick.”

Jensen’s proud dad John added: “His determination to undertake this challenge is a testament to his caring nature but also demonstrates how far he has come with his golf in 18 months, to have the confidence and willingness to do this.

“He normally plays two or three times a week, as well as attending coaching and doing some practice at home.

“As much as we recognise the enormity of this challenge, particularly the physical demands which will be placed on Jensen, he is in good standing with his experience of playing 18-hole rounds.

“We have received fantastic support from the club captain and managing secretary at Renfrew Golf Club, who have given Jensen set tee-off times, which should help him go around the course at a good pace and provide him with some recuperation and rest time between rounds.”

Jensen, who also enjoys swimming and kickboxing, began learning how to play golf last year at Great Western Golf, in Clydebank, where they run free lessons for children, before going on to participate in the Junior Flag Challenge golf tour.

He was given the opportunity to visit The Renaissance Club, in North Berwick, last year before the Scottish Open took place there later that week and was also able to meet professional golf players such as Richie Ramsey and Justin Harding.
