A WARNING has been issued about bogus callers after an elderly Erskine man was scammed out of thousands of pounds.

The 68-year-old victim, who lives in Rashiewood, was approached by a man at around 10am on Wednesday, August 26, and advised that his roof needed repairs.

After the pensioner paid the man around £3,000 in cash to carry out the work, the fraudster returned at around 2pm on Friday, September 11, demanding that he pay a further £800.

The victim’s nephew became concerned after going to the house on Monday, September 14, and being told about the payments.

After he checked his uncle’s roof and discovered that no work had been carried out, he contacted the police.

Enquiries into the incident are ongoing and officers are keen to hear from anyone who has information that can help with their investigation.

Renfrewshire residents are also being urged to remain alert to the risk of rogue traders ‘cold calling’ at their home and ensure appropriate measures are in place to protect vulnerable family members or friends who could fall victim to such crimes.

Inspector Allan O’Hare, head of community policing for Renfrewshire, said: “If you have seen anyone acting suspiciously or going door-to-door, please get in touch with us.

“Residents should check the legitimacy of companies before handing over money or agreeing to any work being carried out, such as asking a family member or neighbour for advice.”

Anyone who can help is asked to call the police on 101.
