AN investigation has been launched after a mattress was deliberately set alight in the common close of a Renfrew tenement.
A 30-year-old resident was inside a nearby flat, in Ferguson Street, at around 1.25am this morning when the incident took place.
A crew from the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service was able to put out the flames before anyone was injured.
Police said the common close was extensively damaged by the blaze and confirmed the incident is being treated as wilful fireraising.
The 30-year-old resident has claimed that money was stolen from him by suspects who were in his flat on Thursday and he believes they are responsible for the fire.
Enquiries are ongoing and anyone with information is asked to call the police on 101.
