VILLAGERS across Renfrewshire are being urged to make use of a community-focused fund to benefit their area.

Renfrewshire Council’s Villages Investment Fund, which is worth a total of £370,000, aims to strengthen the identity, history and heritage of local communities.

However, so far, applications have been scarce, with less than 10 per cent of the money being used.

Residents are being encouraged to apply for funding to invest in projects such as renovating cultural features within the community, creating heritage trails or designing signage.

Councillor Natalie Don, who represents Bishopton, Bridge of Weir and Langbank, said: “As a local councillor, I know the passion that people have within these areas.

“The Villages Investment Fund is an opportunity to take that passion and channel it into projects that could improve our villages.

“I know from contact with residents that there is a perception that less money is spent on our villages than other places and this fund was created to prove that the villages are not left behind.

“We need to utilise this funding to the maximum to ensure this remains a priority.

“If you have an idea for something that could strengthen or highlight your area’s character, identity or heritage, please consider this funding. Ideas could include things like signage, heritage trails or art projects but the possibilities are endless.”

Any constituted or voluntary group can apply but local residents are also being encouraged to have a think about projects that could be eligible.

Support can be given if residents would like to start their own group or, alternatively, ideas can be presented to a relevant group in the local community, who can then take it forward.
