POLICE are appealing for information after handbags were stolen from a car while it was parked in Elderslie.

The 21-year-old owner of the red Land Rover Evoque heard the sound of a car alarm outside her Abbey Drive home at around 4.10am this morning.

When she looked outside, she spotted someone wearing dark clothing and gloves running away from her vehicle.

On further investigation, the woman found the front passenger window had been smashed and two handbags that had been sitting on the front passenger seat were missing.

It is understood a brick was used to smash the window.

Officers with police dogs searched the area but there was no trace of the thief.

The two handbags – one of which is pink-brown and the other is grey –contained work items and a phone charger.

Police said their enquiries are ongoing.

Inspector Allan O’Hare, head of community policing for Renfrewshire, added: “If anyone has information in relation to this incident or has seen anybody acting suspiciously in the area at this time, please get in touch.

“We would also like to reiterate the importance of not leaving any bags or items on display in cars, as it may lead to these items being stolen, as well as a broken window.”

Anyone who can help is asked to call the police on 101.
