GLASGOW’S home carers will soon be tested on a weekly basis for Covid-19 at a similar level to their colleagues in residential units.

The measures will be taken to ensure the city council’s home carer staff feel safe at work while helping the city’s most vulnerable residents.

The issue was raised by Labour councillor Maggie McTernarn at Thursday’s full council meeting who wanted to know what steps had been taken to ensure the safety of worker and the vulnerable residents who depend on them.

Councillor Mhairi Hunter said: “Work is coordinated and scheduled to minimise risk and this includes route planning.

"We provide regular briefings on wellbeing support throughout the pandemic and we use a range of technology to keep in touch.

"The work is actually far more complex than some people realise. Staff are well trained in dementia and adult support. I am also very pleased that weekly testing on a par with care home testing is being introduced soon.”

Councillor Maggie McTeran praised the work being carried out by council staff.

She said: “Our workers are doing some of the most challenging work just now to look after some of our most vulnerable citizens.

“I have heard reports from staff that they don’t always feel safe because safety measures aren’t always implemented because they don’t have adequate levels of PPE.

“I want to know if the convener recognises these concerns particularly around testing. Will these be addressed so staff feel safe carrying out their work.”

Councillor Hunter agreed to provide a written response to Ms McTernarn.
