ROADS chiefs have vowed to make improvements at a Bishopton junction amid concerns about safety.

Councillor James MacLaren has branded the junction at Kingston Road and Old Greenock Road as “notoriously dangerous.”

The Conservative man said many drivers heading along Kingston Road “alarmingly” believe they have right of way over traffic crossing their path on Old Greenock Road.

He contacted Renfrewshire Council to insist that stop signs should be erected at the end of Kingston Road – coming from north and south – to tackle the problem but claimed his call for action had “fallen on deaf ears.”

However, despite not committing to installing stop signs, council officials have since vowed to go over the white markings at the junction.

They have also said they will look at using a cranked pole to make the give way signs more prominent.

Councillor MacLaren, who represents Bishopton, Bridge of Weir and Langbank, has welcomed the pledge from officers but stressed he will continue to push for further measures beyond those promised.

“This junction is all too often the scene of incidents and near misses and action is long overdue,” he said.

“I’ve been calling for officials to look again at this site and I’m pleased they have now agreed to undertake further work.

“We must strive to make this junction as safe as possible, which currently it clearly isn’t.

“I hope these works can start in the near future and I will continue to lobby for further improvements at this junction, which has been notorious for far too long.”

The decision by council bosses to refurbish the markings came after Councillor MacLaren sent over photos detailing the dangers of the junction.

Officers have not yet confirmed when the work will be carried out.

A council spokesperson said: “The safety of road users is paramount and we are happy to investigate all measures which could make our roads infrastructure in Renfrewshire safer.”
