A NEW state-of-the-art primary school in Bishopton is taking shape.

The first pupils at Dargavel Primary are set to be welcomed in time for the 2021/22 academic year.

The school is part of BAE Systems’ redevelopment of the former Royal Ordnance Factory.

Once completed, the two-storey building will have room for 440 pupils aged from four to 11 and its facilities will include indoor and outdoor learning spaces, a cycling proficiency track and an all-weather sports pitch.

Despite disruption caused by the coronavirus pandemic, the foundations have now been laid, drainage installed and the steel framework erected.

The next phase of construction will see the addition of exterior walls and roofing.

BAE Systems is due to hand the school over to Renfrewshire Council next summer.

Jon Gettinby, of BAE Systems, said: “The entire team involved in building the school knows the positive impact it will have within the local community and we’re proud to work on something that will have such a long-lasting impact on the future of Dargavel Village and Bishopton.”

Councillor Natalie Don, who represents Bishopton, Bridge of Weir and Langbank, has welcomed the progress made on the new school.

She said: “The Covid pandemic and the subsequent delays to construction led to many local concerns about this specific project, so it is extremely positive news that BAE have ensured it will still be delivered on time.

“I am sure parents will be very reassured to learn that everything is still on track.”

Councillor Jim Paterson, convener of Renfrewshire’s education and children’s services policy board, added: “I know parents will be pleased to see work progress on this much-anticipated school, despite setbacks due to the pandemic.”
