Greggs is set to axe more than 800 jobs due to sales drops because of the coronavirus pandemic.

It comes quickly after plans for the bakery chain to open a drive-thru in Glasgow were approved by city planners.

Plans for the first drive-thru in Scotland would see the new premises open at Great Western Retail Park in Drumchapel.

But the boss of the chain warned trading decreased due to local lockdown measures and that 820 employees would be made redundant.

In a statement posted on the Greggs employee information website, chief executive Roger Whiteside added that “the battle with Covid hasn’t gone away and is intensifying further” as lockdown measures continue to be in place.

He said: “At lockdown levels of sales, even after all of the mitigating action that we have taken, Greggs will not be profitable as a business and there can be no room for complacency.”

It is not yet clear how may Scottish jobs will be affected.
