A PUB in Parkhead, last used by Celtic fans on match days, can be knocked down and replaced with flats, the council has ruled.

Permission has been granted for the demolition of the Paradise Bar on Tollcross Road.

The plans, submitted by CDB Properties back in 2015, will see 13 homes built in a five-storey block.

There is set to be three one-bedroom flats, nine two-bedroom and one three-bedroom property.

A planning report, also submitted in 2015, stated: “The pub is known as the ‘Paradise Bar’ and for a number of years now only opens during football games for the nearby Celtic Park.

“With a considerable number of public houses in the area, as a business case, this concern is becoming less viable and profitable.”

It added: “The vision for the proposed scheme is one of a high-quality residential unit which provides an architectural response sensitive to the existing built environment and in keeping with the townscape of the area.”

There has been a pub on the site since the 19th century, the plans reveal.

Montgomery’s Tavern was built in the early 1800s and used by bowlers at a nearby bowling green. It was taken over by Samuel Gardner in the 1890s, staying with his family until the late 1950s.

“From the mid 20th century to the present day the pub has gone through many reinventions with a continual turnover of tenants and landlords.

“Over the last decade there has been a marked increase in tenant turnover with many only achieving a year in business.”

The property is within a conservation area and is highlighted as an ‘unlisted building of merit’.

“While the history of the property is fully noted, its preservation is at the detriment of the economic vibrancy of the area and essentially creates a blank, vacant appearance except on match days,” the plans added.

“The positive redevelopment of this property and site into a high-quality residential development should be welcomed by Glasgow City Council as investment in this part of the city is supported by planning policy at all levels.”

There will be no parking included in the development, but a planning condition will ensure there is space for bikes.
