POLICE are hunting a thief in a high-vis jacket who tried to break into a village shop.
The would-be robber attempted to force his way inside Kilbarchan Newsagents, in New Street, shortly before 2am yesterday but set off the alarm.
When the 36-year-old owner of the shop, who had been alerted by his alarm company, arrived at the scene, he discovered a broken window at the rear of the premises.
Footage from a CCTV camera shows the crook – wearing the high-visibility jacket, as well as a hat and gloves – trying to gain entry to the store but being foiled by security bars.
He then ran off when the alarm was activated.
Police believe he may have been wearing the jacket to make anyone who spotted him think he was a workman.
Officers have asked anyone with information to call them on 101.
