A MAN has been arrested after reportedly crashing a stolen car following a botched getaway in Renfrewshire.

Police were alerted to the alleged theft in the early hours of Saturday morning when a 58-year-old man discovered his Range Rover was missing from Paisley Road, in Renfrew.

A tracking device on the vehicle was able to tell officers that the car appeared to be in the Parkvale area of Erskine.

It is claimed that, when police arrived at the scene at 3am, they spotted the suspect sitting in the stolen car.

As officers approached the vehicle, he reportedly drove off at high speed for a short distance before careering through a garden and crashing into a garage.

After a brief struggle, officers were able to remove the suspect from the vehicle and he was arrested.

Police said there was significant damage to the car and the garage was partially demolished because of the collision.

The 28-year-old suspect, who suffered a small cut above his eye, failed a roadside breath test.

He was later taken to hospital as police believed he had ingested drugs.

The suspect was charged with theft of a motor vehicle, various road traffic offences, breach of the peace, police assault and resisting arrest.

He was due to appear at Paisley Sheriff Court today.
