MEMBERS of a brass band have been taking centre stage on social media to entertain audiences this Christmas.

Performers from Johnstone Band would usually have a busy few weeks of concerts and carol playing in and around the local area in the build-up to the big day, which is a crucial period for raising funds.

However, lockdown restrictions have led to the band making music together online instead, with members using their weekly Zoom rehearsals to prepare for a virtual Christmas concert.

They recorded their parts individually at home for the concert, which included carols and other festive favourites, before each contribution was carefully brought together to create an overall performance by freelance musician Aaron McGregor and shared via social media.

Mark Good, musical director of Johnstone Band, told The Gazette: “The past few months have been very strange, as we would usually see each other several times a week, rehearsing and performing together.

“Meeting online has helped us keep up momentum, encouraging players to keep their lips in shape.

“For many people, they don’t feel Christmassy until they’ve heard the sound of a brass band. We hope this performance helps spread some much-needed festive cheer.”

June Deans, chair of Johnstone Band, added: “Although we can’t wait until we can perform together in person, we have enjoyed working on our virtual performances and sharing these with everyone, wherever they are in the world.”

Johnstone Band’s virtual festive concert is available to view on their Facebook and Twitter pages.
