A MAN has been charged with possession of an offensive weapon and a misuse of drugs offence in Johnstone.

The 30-year-old suspect was reported to police on Wednesday for informing members of the public in the town centre that he was carrying a hammer to protect himself.

He was traced by officers near the town's police station, in Church Street, at around 12.45pm.

It is alleged that, when police searched the suspect, they found a claw hammer and around 30 tablets – believed to be 'street Valium' – in his possession.

The officers then arrested the man, who is understood to have entered Johnstone police station earlier that day.

A report has been sent to the Procurator Fiscal.
