POLICE are hunting a man who crashed his car outside an Italian restaurant in Renfrew.

The driver of a silver Peugeot 108 fled the scene after the vehicle smashed into bollards outside Piccolo Mondo, in Hairst Street, at around 8.30pm on Saturday.

A police helicopter was brought in to help with efforts to trace the man, who is understood to have made off in the direction of Robertson Park.

He is described as in his late 20s or early 30s, white, bald and of medium build. At the time, he was wearing a black tracksuit.

Police said the car, which was badly damaged in the smash, was taken away for forensic examination.

It is understood that no-one was injured during the incident.

Inspector Allan O’Hare, head of community policing for Renfrewshire, said: "If anyone can identify the driver who ran away following the crash, please get in touch."

Call police on 101 if you have any information.
