A MAJOR operation was launched this morning after a car reportedly entered a river in Bridge of Weir.

It is understood the vehicle was discovered in the water next to Hattrick Farm, which is to the north of the village, at 10.22am.

The Scottish Fire and Rescue Service (SFRS) dispatched two appliances and two water rescue resources to the scene.

Police vehicles, ambulances and water rescue units were also reportedly seen racing through Bridge of Weir to the scene.

A Scottish Fire and Rescue Service spokesperson said at the time there had been no reported casualties and fire crews had left the area.

They said: “We were alerted at 10.22am on Tuesday, February 23 to reports of a car in the water at Hattrick Farm, Bridge of Weir.

“Operations Control mobilised two appliances and two water rescue resources to the scene.

“There were no reported casualties.

“Crews have now left the scene.”

A spokesperson for the Scottish Ambulance Service said: “We received a call today to attend an incident in Inverclyde. We dispatched our special operations team and one ambulance to the scene.”

Police have now confirmed that the incident is connected to the discovery of a body in woods near Bridge of Weir this afternoon, just hours after officers appealed for help to find a missing man.
