POLICE have pledged to crack down on groups of unruly youths gathering in Renfrew and Erskine.

The pledge came after several fires were deliberately started at a popular play park in Robertson Park over the weekend.

The castle climbing frame, which was part of a £1million investment in the green space in 2017, has had to be cordoned off and repaired after yobs set fire to a bin next to it.

Inspector Allan O’Hare, head of community policing for Renfrewshire, said: "I'd like to take this opportunity to thank the vast majority of people in Renfrew and Erskine for following the guidelines during these challenging times. I am aware of reports of anti-social behaviour and I'm disappointed we're experiencing these issues.

"We’re asking people to take personal responsibility to do the right thing and remember the purpose of these measures is to help protect the NHS and save lives by preventing the virus from spreading.

"We’re also urging parents, guardians and carers to ensure they’ve talked to the young people in their lives about the importance of abiding by the restrictions and the consequences of getting involved in anti-social behaviour.

"Our officers will take appropriate action where incidents of anti-social behaviour and vandalism are reported and offenders identified. Anyone who has concerns about anti-social behaviour in their area is encouraged to contact police by calling 101 as promptly as possible."
