POLICE have said they have not received reports of dogs being stolen in Renfrewshire, despite concerns raised on social media.

Pet owners had been placed on alert amid fears dognapping is a threat to pooches in the area following posts shared widely on Facebook over the past week.

Two incidents were said to have taken place in Paisley on Friday night, both involving a white Transit van.

Another widely-shared post on Monday night claimed two French bulldogs had been stolen from a woman.

However, police said there have been no reports of these incidents taking place, with owners urged to call officers immediately if they believe their dogs are being targeted by thieves.

Scottish SPCA chief superintendent Mike Flynn added: “In our experience, animals tend to be stolen for breeding purposes or because they can be sold on for profit.

“It is very important that owners supervise their animals when they are outdoors and remain cautious.”
