A FORMER headteacher at a Renfrewshire nursery who had “an amazing and special way with children” has died at the age of 81.

Agnes Law, known as Ag, led Morton Nursery, in Linwood, for more than two decades until her retirement just before the millennium.

Her daughter, Janie, told The Gazette: “She was at Morton for 22 years and was totally dedicated to the job.

“She was passionate about pre-school education, which was aimed at four-year-olds at that time, and getting them ready for school.”

Mrs Law, who was one of five siblings and had a twin sister named Georgie, was born in Barrhead on October 12, 1939.

She met her future husband Jim when they played together at their local tennis club and the couple went on to have two children – Janie and Wendy.

After graduating from Jordanhill College in 1968, Mrs Law worked at Auchenback Primary, in Barrhead, before moving into pre-school education, where she spent the majority of her career.

She retired from Morton Nursery at the age of 60 and it closed in 2008.

Pauline McCann, early learning and childcare officer at Our Lady of Peace Primary, in Linwood, said: “I had the privilege of knowing Mrs Law firstly as a student in Morton Nursery, where I gained a wealth of knowledge under her guidance.

“I then became a member of staff and worked with her for many years.

“She was an inspirational lady who had the interest and wellbeing of the children and their families and indeed the whole of the Linwood community at the core of everything she worked for and believed in.

"She was respected and loved by everyone who knew her due to her dedication and care she showed the children and families.

"She will be greatly missed by all who had the pleasure of knowing her.

"On a personal level, I would like to take the opportunity to thank Mrs Law for everything she taught me over the years and for inspiring me to continue to pursue a career in early years education."

Mrs Law also had a passion for singing in choirs, including the Thomas Coats Memorial Choral Society, in Paisley.

Her funeral was held on March 8 at St Andrew’s Church, Barrhead.
