THE shutters of a bank in Johnstone town centre came down for the final time on Tuesday.

Bosses at TSB have closed the Rankine Street branch as part of the bank’s latest raft of cost-cutting measures.

The bank has also confirmed that it intends to close its base in Renfrew on Tuesday, May 18.

It is part of major plans to shut 164 branches across the UK this year, with the loss of almost 1,000 jobs, and comes after the company already identified 82 sites for closure in 2019.

Bosses said the move has been driven by a “shift in customer behaviour,” including a huge reduction in the number of people using high street branches and instead opting for online banking.

Since 2016, Renfrew has lost its Santander, Clydesdale and RBS branches, while the Clydesdale site in Johnstone has also shut.

A spokesperson for TSB said: “This will doubtless be disappointing to TSB’s customers in Johnstone.

“However, alternative banking provision is available to local residents at Post Office branches nearby.”

The nearest Post Office branches to the TSB bank are in Walkinshaw Street and Sycamore Avenue, both Johnstone, and Clippens Road, in Linwood.

Each offers banking services such as free cash withdrawals and balance checks.
