Supermarket workers refused to let heavy rain dampen their spirits as they completed a socially-distanced seven-mile trek to raise funds for sick kids.

Eight colleagues at the Morrisons store in Johnstone walked to Howwood in aid of the Glasgow Children’s Hospital Charity.

The fundraiser was organised by doorstep delivery champion Jackie Docherty, who dressed up as a Teletubby, and community champion Julie Scott, who completed the journey in her pyjamas.

It was the culmination of a week of fundraising which also included a pyjama day.

Jackie told The Gazette: “I suggested we do seven miles in one day and make it a fun day to boost the morale in the store a wee bit because with the isolating and not getting out it’s just a bit flat.

“The rain just got heavier and heavier but we got there in the end and had a laugh along the way as well.”

“We met a lot of people on the way, on the cycle path, that donated as well. Everybody was so generous.”

Julie added: “I just want to thank everyone for supporting us.”

Jackie took on the role of the store’s doorstep delivery champion during the pandemic and completed the trek straight after a shift delivering shopping to elderly and vulnerable residents.

It is not the first time, however, that she has donned fancy dress in the name of the greater good over the past year.

She also used to do kids’ parties and used that experience to dress up as a clown and cheer up residents on her delivery rounds.

“I previously worked at Linwood Community Childcare full-time but I worked at Morrisons for my part-time job on evenings and weekends on the checkouts,” she added.

“I was furloughed from the nursery and then I started to get extra hours helping out on the door when the queuing system was put in place.

“The people manager Yvonne (Frame) then came to me and said ‘Have you driven a van before?’ and I said ‘No, but I’ll give it a go’ and I loved it.

“I went back to nursery but then Morrisons offered me a full-time position because they had decided to keep the doorstep role for good and made me doorstep champion.

“Some people don’t see anybody from day to day. I was doing a delivery recently and the customer told me it was so nice to actually see another person.

“It is such a rewarding job.”
