The suspects, who were all white and wearing dark clothing, ran off from the scene following the incident, which police have confirmed they are treating as attempted murder.
Detective Inspector Ian Ross, of Paisley CID, said: "From enquiries carried out so far, we believe this may have been a pre-planned and targeted attack on the victim, which has left him with serious injuries.
"The incident happened in a busy residential area, with lots of flats overlooking the street, and it is likely that people will have witnessed what happened.
"I am appealing for anyone who was nearby and saw the assault take place, or noticed anything at all suspicious, to please get in touch.
"Anyone with information is asked to contact Police Scotland through 101, quoting incident number 2962 of Wednesday, April 28. Alternatively you can call Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111."
