WREATHS were laid in Renfrewshire earlier this week to mark International Workers Memorial Day.

Members of Paisley and District Trades Union Council attended commemoration events at the Workers Memorial Cairn in Robertson Park, Renfrew, and at the flagpoles outside Renfrewshire House, in Paisley, on Wednesday.

Robert Parker, secretary of Paisley and District Trades Union Council, said he was pleased with the turnout despite lockdown restrictions.

He told The Gazette: "It was decided to keep things low key this year - a lot of our affiliates have been isolating, and still are, therefore we did not invite any speakers.

"We invited attendees to speak for couple of minutes only, observed a minute's silence and laid wreaths."

Affiliates from four unions attended the ceremonies, as well as representatives from the SNP and Labour, including George Adam, John McNaughtan and Jim Sharkey.

Mr Parker added: "We come together every year on April 28 to remember those who went to work but never came home and the families they left behind, often with very young children. Sometimes they were just starting out on their working life when it was cut off by unsafe practices at work.

"We remember that we must fight to maintain and increase the health and safety of all at work. We also remember that innocent members of the public get killed due to workplace incidents, 108 according to the last Health and Safety Executive (HSE) statistics for 2019/20.

"Especially this year we remember those in caring professions that knew they were at risk but still went to work to look after us."
