A WARNING has been issued about phone app scams following reports of fraudsters targeting people in Renfrewshire.

It is understood scammers have been calling their victims and claiming that there is an issue with their wifi system.

The criminals then convince them to download specific apps onto their mobile phones, which the fraudsters use to transfer money from the victim's bank account to their own account.

Inspector Laura Hamill, of Renfrewshire's community policing team, said: "I would like to warn local residents of this current scam, fraudsters often come across as 'genuine' and use extremely high-tech methods to commit their crimes.

"Should you receive a call of this nature or similar, please hang up and contact your bank or internet provider via a trusted telephone number to confirm the authenticity of the caller.

"If you have been a victim of fraud or have information in relation to such a crime, please contact Police Scotland on 101.

"If you wish to remain anonymous, you can call Crime Stoppers on 0800 555 111."
