The Houston Agricultural Show is going digital.

Organisers of the annual farming fair have had to tear up their plans for a second successive year because of restrictions on people gathering in public during the Covid pandemic.

However, the spirit of the show lives on, with arrangements made to take it online instead.

Emma Harper, who helps her parents at Gryffe Wraes Farm and looks after the event's PR and social media, said: “Bringing people together online is so important right now.

"The Houston Agricultural Show is so important to the village and we welcome new people to join in our long-established customs.

“While we are missing a second year of our wonderful industrial tent baking and craft entries, this is an opportunity for local children and adults to get creative in new ways and share them online as part of the virtual show.”

Mo Lyle, show secretary, added: “We have been stunned by the generosity of local businesses who have donated fantastic prizes for the different categories.

“We would encourage local people to take part and demonstrate their support for the Houston Agricultural Show.”

Villagers are also encouraged to stand in the streets and ‘wave in their wellies’ as the Houston Show Tractor Run takes place on Friday, June 4.

Tom Stewart, president of the Houston Agricultural Show, hopes it will make a triumphant return in 2022.

“It’s a real chance for us country folks to show off our industry to the public," he said. “I enjoy all the work leading up to show day but the showing of local cattle and stock is most enjoyable.”
