Young footballers are appealing for businesses to help them host an 11-a-side tournament to celebrate their club’s 50th anniversary.

The 2006 squad from Linwood Rangers Youth Football Club hope to bring together teams from their age group at the end of this month for the event at Mossedge Park.

To allow the special day to go ahead, however, they need to raise funds to cover the expense of the event, which will involve six teams.

“It’s costing us a lot of money to get this up and running because you’ve got to hire the pitches, buy medals for all of the teams taking part, a trophy for the winner and you’ve got referees to pay for,” explained Craig Hamilton, who is one of the squad’s four coaches.

“If there are any businesses in the Renfrewshire community who want to help, any small donation or whatever to put towards the costs would be much appreciated.

“If you would like to donate or sponsor the event, we have a team of 16 young boys who would be happy to hand out flyers for your companies and also a Facebook page where we would be more than happy to promote your business.”

Linwood Rangers was formed in 1971, with local policeman Alex Stephen as chairman.

Craig has described the club’s Golden Jubilee as “a massive landmark.”

“Not a lot of clubs can say they are 50 years old and still going,” he added.

“Unfortunately, Alex is no longer with us but we have an Alex Stephen tournament every year in his memory.”

“It’s been superb to see the kids back playing and out enjoying themselves.”

Craig has thanked organisations already backing the anniversary event, including Linwood Community Development Trust, Add Vision, Arnold Clark, The Golf Bunker Studio and Gina’s Vintage Barbers.
