FAMILIES have been exploring Renfrewshire’s cultural gems as part of a game that encourages them to get active.

Beat the Street is a free, interactive challenge taking place in Bridge of Weir, Elderslie, Houston, Howwood, Kilbarchan, Linwood, Johnstone and Lochwinnoch.

Players walk, run, scoot or cycle between ‘beat boxes’ spaced approximately half a mile apart – hovering their fobs or cards over them to score points.

The further they travel, the more points they score for their community or school team, with a range of prizes up for grabs.

More than 5,000 people have signed up to take part, clocking up a combined total of 15,000 miles.

There are leaderboards for schools, community teams and workplaces.
Fordbank Primary, in Johnstone, has surged to the top of the overall leaderboard but organisers say the race is “very close.”

The game adopts a different theme each week, with the most recent being ‘Go Explore.’

This has seen players being encouraged to visit the area’s heritage sites, where bonus points have been available on beat boxes.
