A LINWOOD man is raising funds for a mental health organisation after losing a friend to suicide.

Keen footballer Conor Macdonald, 20, was left shocked by the tragic death of his former team-mate.

Now he aims to coin in £500 for the Kick the Stigma initiative, which encourages men to open up about their mental health.

Conor admits that, before his friend’s death, he didn’t give the importance of good mental health much thought.

He told The Gazette: “I didn’t really know about mental health but I think it is something that has affected everyone, or at least someone we know.

“A community is something that we all want to be a part of and that support system plays such a big role in the ability to talk about men’s mental health.

“It’s a strength to show weakness. I think that’s something we need to identify and encourage. It’s okay not to be okay.”

Although he was born in Renfrewshire, Conor moved to Canada as a young boy and spent his childhood there, playing for a football team in the city of Edmonton, Alberta.

Losing one of his team-mates in tragic circumstances provided the inspiration to raise funds and, having moved back to Renfrewshire, he has been impressed by the support offered from the local community.

Conor said: “Being part of a community is so important, whether it’s through sports such as football or just with others in your local area.

“We’re stronger together than we are on our own and even just listening to someone can change their life.”

A number of Conor’s former team-mates and coaches have already supported his fundraising drive.

He added: “I think that’s the beauty of things like this – it brings us all together.”
