A DETERMINED schoolboy has raised a bumper sum for a good cause after being inspired to tackle a 154km sponsored trek by his late uncle.

Nine-year-old Connor Beck, from Renfrew, stepped up to coin in £1,555 during his latest challenge to walk the West Highland Way in aid of the British Heart Foundation (BHF).

The walk was in memory of his uncle John Clark, a well-known SNP activist who attempted a 100km trek between Glasgow and Edinburgh for the charity before he died suddenly in 2019 at the age of 34.

Supported by relatives and his friend Evan McCrone, Connor’s adventure from Milngavie to Fort William was spread over four weekends – and finished on the weekend that would have been his uncle’s 36th birthday.

Last year, the Newmains Primary pupil raised thousands of pounds for the BHF after completing a 35km bike ride.

Connor told The Gazette: “It was a brilliant feeling when we got to the end of the West Highland Way, as it was a very long distance and I was very happy to reach the finish.

“I enjoyed seeing all the countryside, mountains and lochs and thought a lot about my Uncle John, who did a long trek for the BHF too.

“I thank everyone who sponsored me and helped raise lots of money.”

Connor’s mum, Michelle Clark, added: “John would be so proud of Connor’s tremendous fundraising efforts and donating more than £1,500 to the British Heart Foundation, which was a cause close to John’s heart, on his birthday is very special.

“As a huge campaigner for the SNP, John would have appreciated that there was a pro-independence stall near the finish line, so we bought a Scotland flag and laid it at his grave when we got home.

“After cycling for BHF last year and trekking this summer, we look forward to discovering what fundraising challenge Connor will be determined to do next year.”

James Jopling, head of BHF Scotland, said: “Words cannot describe how proud we are of Connor and all he has done to support the BHF in his Uncle John’s memory.

“Completing the West Highland Way is a challenge in itself but to do so at such a young age is an amazing achievement and we cannot thank him enough.”
