Oxfordshire MPs have reacted after a Conservative MP in Essex has been stabbed multiple times this afternoon.

Sir David Amess, who has represented Southend West in Essex since 1997, was attacked on Friday afternoon in Leigh-on-Sea at Belfairs Methodist Church.

A man has been arrested.

Former Prime Minister and Witney Mp David Cameron said: "This is the most devastating, horrific & tragic news.

"David Amess was a kind & thoroughly decent man - & he was the most committed MP you could ever hope to meet.

"Words cannot adequately express the horror of what has happened today. Right now, my heart goes out to David’s family."

Victoria Prentis, Conservative MP for North Oxfordshire, described the incident as 'Absolutely shocking'. 

She added: "My Thoughts and prayers are with [Sir David Amess] and his family."

Layla Moran, Liberal Democrat MP for Oxford West and Abingdon, said: "I am devastated to now hear Sir David Amess has died. My thoughts and condolences with his family and friends."

The former Oxford West and Abingdon MP Nicola Blackwood said the incident is 'awful' and she offered 'strength' to Sir Amess and his family.
