SCORES of football enthusiasts embraced the beautiful game together in memory of a young man who died after undergoing heart surgery.

The charity tournament kicked off at Mossedge Village in Linwood to honour Scott Cowan, who died last November at the age of 25.

Dean Robertson, who was friends with Scott from their school days in Paisley, told The Gazette: “It was a great day, with a lot of laughs and banter.

“There was a really good turnout, with around 70 players in total and a number of people also coming along to watch.

“I think Scott would have been delighted to know he meant so much to so many people.”

A team made up of employees from The Boxshop, which were Scott’s first employers, were awarded the trophy after battling it out with six other teams.

The tournament was organised by Dean and his friends to raise funds for Cardiac Risk in the Young (CRY) organisation.

Proceeds will be used to screen young people, aged 18 to 35, to make sure that, if they have an issue with their heart, it is detected before it becomes an emergency situation.

Dean added: “Between the raffle, charity auction and cash donations, I believe we have now reached our target of £2,500.

“A lunch with former St Mirren manager Danny Lennon was sold for £200, so it was great of Danny to offer his time and come up with that idea.

“I would like to thank everyone who was involved in organising the event and all those who took part.”
