A RENFREWSHIRE railway station is the fourth busiest in Scotland, latest figures show.

Almost one million passenger entries and exits were recorded at Paisley Gilmour Street during 2020/21.

Only Glasgow Central (5.3 million), Edinburgh Waverley (2.9 million) and Glasgow Queen Street (2.3 million) were busier, with Partick (634,162) completing the top five.

The numbers were revealed in the Office of Rail and Road’s (ORR) estimates of station usage, which include the annual total of passenger entries and exits at each of the 2,500 stations across Great Britain.

The impact of the Covid pandemic is seen throughout ORR’s statistics, with 47 railway stations in Scotland recording fewer than 1,000 entries and exits in 2020/21.

Beasdale station, in the Highlands, recorded no passenger entries and exits.

Feras Alshaker, director of planning and performance at ORR, said: “Throughout 2020/21, the railways remained an essential service for those who needed to travel during a year which was impacted by the pandemic.

“This year, we have seen many railway stations with very few passenger entries and exits. However, we know that recent figures show leisure journeys are nearly back to pre-pandemic levels, while there has been a slower increase in commuter journeys.”
