A MAN was arrested after allegedly stealing thousands of pounds worth of valuables from a Renfrew restaurant.

The 32-year-old suspect was reported to police by a member of the public who is said to have spotted him struggling to push a safe along Canal Street at around 9.55am on Tuesday.

When officers arrived at the scene, they quickly traced a man near the Luna Rossa restaurant.

Police said the suspect was found in possession of the bistro's safe, which contained valuables worth a four-figure sum.

He was charged with theft and was due to appear at Paisley Sheriff Court the next day.
