A PHONE giant has lodged plans to build a 5G phone mast in the Cowcaddens area of Glasgow.

CK Hutchison Networks - known as Three - has written to council planning chiefs for permission to erect a 16m mast on Shamrock Street.

Developers say there is a need for equipment to be upgraded to improve the network and capacity for 5G services.

Three say they are "in the process of building the UK's fastest 5G network" and that their provision will be much faster than other providers. The company is providing a number of new sites and upgrades to existing provision as the higher radio frequencies do not travel as far as those currently in use.

The company also states in planning documents that the mast has been kept down to the "absolute minimum" required to provide 5G coverage in the area.

Documents will be examined by the Glasgow City Council planning department in due course.
