PUPILS at two Renfrewshire schools have been getting creative as part of a road safety initiative.
Leading housebuilder Taylor Wimpey West Scotland challenged youngsters at Bishopton Primary and Dargavel Primary to design a sign that would encourage motorists to slow down near its new show homes in Dargavel Village.
The two winning designs – created by primary six pupil Lucas Diver and primary five pupil Olivia Sloan – have been recreated as signs that are now installed near the entrance to the latest phase of homes off Craigton Drive.
Lucas, from Bishopton Primary, and Olivia, of Dargavel Primary, were each rewarded with a £50 book token.
And the overall standard of designs was so high that a further six were chosen to create a banner for Taylor Wimpey’s show area car park, to remind drivers to keep their speed down whilst moving around the area.
Each of the children who created those designs received a £20 book token.
Audrey Ross, sales and marketing director for Taylor Wimpey West Scotland, said the project has been a great opportunity to connect with the growing community in Bishopton and Dargavel Village.
She told The Gazette: “We recognise the importance of making sure that we support the communities in which we build our new homes.
“It has been our pleasure to work with both local primary schools on this project and to strengthen and extend our links once again with the local community of Bishopton and Dargavel Village.
“This project comes at a time when 20mph is the aspired vehicle speed resulting from our detailed layout designs and we hope the children’s signs will serve as a reminder to drivers to maintain a safe vehicle speed.”
Louise Chisholm, depute headteacher at Dargavel Primary, said: “Having the opportunity to work with Taylor Wimpey to create speed signs has been an exciting challenge but a great way to deliver a very important message.”
Catherine Davidson, Bishopton Primary’s depute headteacher, added: “This is a lovely connection between our schools and the local Taylor Wimpey development at Dargavel Village.
“The children all really enjoyed tackling their brief to create a bold and colourful design and we are very proud of their efforts.”
