A SUPPORT fund has been set up to help those who are struggling to cope with soaring energy bills this winter.

Payments ranging from £100 to £500 will be made to help clear outstanding debt, with the cash being paid direct to the relevant energy supplier.

The Scottish Government has set aside a total of £3million for the nationwide scheme, which is to be run by Advice Direct Scotland.

Andrew Bartlett, chief executive of the advice service, said: “With recent energy price rises and more on the horizon, we know that many people are facing financial difficulties at the moment.

“Last year, we discovered that families were rationing energy such as only heating one room. This fund is designed to ensure that people do not have to make that choice.”

The Home Heating Support Fund will be open until the end of March and applications can be made online on behalf of individuals by ‘referral partners’ such as the council, housing associations and charities.

Energy prices are expected to rise steeply in the spring, with growing concerns about the impact this will have on local households.

Mr Bartlett added: “This fund will prove absolutely crucial in ensuring that households who have been hit the hardest can continue to heat their homes and feed their families.

“Our unique experience and infrastructure at Advice Direct Scotland guarantees our capability to ensure that financial support reaches consumers facing financial hardship, while our nationwide network allows us to deliver this vital service and ensure that all households suffering from fuel poverty can receive the help they need.”

Although individuals can’t apply for funding directly, they are being asked to call Advice Direct Scotland’s free helpline on 0808 800 9060 or visit www.advice.scot so that advisers can assess their eligibility and refer them if appropriate.
